The best time for big and consistent swell in Morocco is during the Winter months, usually from October to March. The swell from the north Atlantic hits the long Moroccan coast and creates wonderful, mostly right-hand waves along the beaches and point breaks.
Beach breaks are ideal locations to learn to surf. Especially in Morocco where it’s just mild water and sand – no seaweed, rocks or algae to worry about! The water rarely dips below 18’C during the very coldest times, making a 3/2 wetsuit ideal for almost the whole season.
Experienced surfers, including the pros, come out to Morocco during this time for the chance to surf infamous point breaks in the right conditions. These reef bottomed, rocky outcrops usually work best at low-tide; point breaks such as Anchor Point are really made for those huge swell days when they can harness massive swells, making them fire from dawn to dusk, regardless of the tide. These pictures are from just before this Christmas, December 2015, and show the potential conditions world-class surfers hunt the globe to find.

Smaller waves can also be found during these times and it’s why staying at a camp with experienced, local surf instructors is so important. They will always search for the beach with waves for your level. Learning in the white water can be great fun at this time as you can also spy on the advanced surfers out the back catching the green waves. And it never gets boring stopping off at a spot like Anchors to watch the pros carve it up! You can definitely learn a thing or two watching these experienced surfers!

But also during the summer months, Morocco can also be the ideal destination for the first-time surfer. Smaller swell and balmy temperatures (often up into the 40’Cs!) it makes for an ideal summer holiday where you can balance sun-bathing on the beach with learning a new sport. So if you’re looking for a mix of relaxing on the beach with a book whilst also getting active and trying something new, May to July make a great time to try surfing in Morocco too. Smaller waves make for a great playground with longer boards.
This is why Morocco makes such a great surf destination all year round!
